the Eagles as they played Ireland in the recent Barclay Cup Tournament, held in Toronto and Chicago.

Jason follows Dave Williams and Own Collins in getting a cap, and we look forward to hearing more of his exploits .

USA Rugby Moves the Date, Location of its Match versus Munster

BOULDER, Colo. -- After much deliberation and careful consideration, USA Rugby has decided to move the Setanta Challenge Cup, featuring the USA Eagles versus Munster, to Rentschler Field in Hartford, Conn. With the location change, the match will also be changing the date and time information and will now be played on Saturday, August 23 at 3 p.m.

The change of location was in part due to Munster’s success in this year’s Heineken Cup. USA Rugby needed to change locations in order to meet the increased space requirements needed for this year’s match. The date change was just an added benefit as USA Rugby was initially required to host the match on Friday, in Boston, due to other venue obligations.

“The Irish Cultural Centre of New England understands the need to accommodate the many spectators that will want to attend this exiting match especially since Munster may bring with them the Heineken Cup. Although the match will not be at the Centre we look forward to welcoming the Munster Rugby Team to New England and are looking forward to working with USA Rugby to bring this International match to all the many rugby fans both old and new,” said Sean Grant, Executive Director speaking on behalf of the Irish Cultural Centre of New England.

“We are extremely pleased that it worked out for the Eagles to return to Rentschler Field in Hartford. The new location allows us the opportunity to capitalize on Munster’s success and more importantly it allows more of our fans the chance to see the game live. With a mid-afternoon kickoff we encourage fans from all over New England to make a day out of this unique opportunity,” said Court Jeske, Director of Marketing, for USA Rugby.

Rentschler Field is Connecticut’s sports & entertainment stadium. In addition to being the new home of the University of Connecticut Huskies football team, Rentschler Field's 40,000-seat stadium is the perfect setting for college football, concerts, conferences, banquets and special events.

U.S., top European rugby teams to play in Canton

More than 10,000 people are expected to descend on Canton this summer for a night match between the U.S. Men’s National Rugby Team and Ireland’s Munster Rugby, the 2006 Heineken Cup champs and the top-ranked European team.

The Irish Cultural Centre of New England is hosting the Aug. 22 exhibition game, which will be broadcast live on ESPN Classic.

“New England has the largest concentration of college students playing rugby in the United States, and it is the first time in recent memory - and maybe ever - that an international rugby tourney will be held in Massachusetts,” said Sean Grant, executive director of the center, whose facilities include the home field of the top-ranked Boston Irish Wolfhounds amateur rugby team. “We’re potentially looking at 12,000 people coming to the event.”

Rugby in Ireland dates to the mid-1800s, and the International Rugby Board is based in Dublin. And while Harvard University played the first recorded rugby match on American soil against Montreal’s McGill University in 1874, rugby is still very much a developing sport stateside, with growing popularity among youth, high school and college players.

USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville sees the match as an opportunity for U.S. player development and to raise the sport’s profile in the United States. The USA Eagles is an amateur team, and its players have other full-time jobs.

“Our goal is to create a full-time professional team representing America,” Melville said. “We need to play against these teams to get our players to the right level to compete against the best in the world.”

The two teams played last year in Chicago, where some 9,000 fans watched Munster win 10-6.

Tickets to the USA-Munster match will be available through Ticketmaster starting May 30.

Eagles to Play Munster at the Irish Cultural Centre of New England

BOULDER, Colo. – USA Rugby officially announced today its plans to host Munster in what’s sure to be an exciting match-up featuring the U.S. Men’s National Rugby Team against the 2006 Heineken (European) Cup Champions and top ranked European Rugby Team (ERC), Munster Rugby. The event will be hosted by the Irish Cultural Centre of New England in Canton, Mass., on Friday, August 22 at 8 p.m and broadcast live on ESPN Classic.

These two teams played each other last year in Chicago with Munster winning a hard fought match 10-6. This match again will prove to be a tough test for the US team as they face an experienced Munster team that features several members on the Ireland squad.

“It’s obviously exciting to have Munster, one of the best teams in Europe, coming back to the USA,” USA Rugby CEO and President of Rugby Nigel Melville said. “Building a relationship with a professional team of their caliber is great for USA Rugby. Munster was very keen to play in Boston, with its strong Irish heritage. New England is a great place for USA Rugby as well, as we have a large following in the Northeast and know everyone will get behind the arrival of both Munster and our Eagles in Boston.”

This is the first National Team Match that USA Rugby has hosted in the Boston area in several years and USA Rugby event administrators are looking forward to a big turnout at an area with great Irish tradition and culture. This tradition and culture is most evident by the location of this event at the Irish Cultural Centre.

“As an Irish umbrella organization for Irish Heritage and Culture, we are honored to have been chosen by USA Rugby to host this match between these two great teams at our 48 acre campus in Canton,” said Irish Cultural Centre Executive Director Sean Grant. “Even though it is just being officially announced, the Irish community is already very excited about the prospect of having a professional rugby match here in New England. The members of the Irish Cultural Centre and our home team the Boston Irish Wolfhounds are proud to showcase the great Irish tradition of rugby, represented by Munster Rugby. I know many will want to be present at this historic event.”

This event, which was also made possible by the help and cooperation from the local Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which has agreed to hold the match on their main field, represents the first time they will host a rugby event in the U.S. and symbolizes a continuation of the partnership the GAA and rugby have formed in Ireland. USA Rugby and the GAA have also planned a fan festival for the community that will take place throughout the weekend and will include the GAA semifinals.

“Munster is looking forward to this match as it represents the ideal type of preparation ahead of the new season and gives us the opportunity to expose our squad to quality opposition. It is always an honor to play against international competition and we are delighted to be traveling to Boston for this game.” said Munster Head Coach Declan Kidney.

This match will showcase the improvements that are being made with the U.S. National Team as they will have had a whole summer under the tutelage of new coach Scott Johnson. Scott is an experienced player and coach who is renowned for his in-depth rugby mind. He has worked with the world’s top players and will bring enormous enthusiasm to his role and this match in particular.

“It’s important to note that this match is not just about the teams showing up and playing the game, it’s about the opportunities this match presents to develop the game of rugby on a whole,” Melville added. “With coach, referee and youth development opportunities, USA Rugby is looking forward to developing this into a legacy event. We are about furthering the growth of the game and a fixture like this can only help build upon our momentum forward.”

Tickets for this match will be available through Ticketmaster starting May 30. More information will be made available regarding group rates and prices, closer to that date.

Spring 2008 - quick update

Well the Spring Season will be soon upon us and this year the Wolfhounds will be going full blast to feature in the National Divisional Championships and the Super League Playoffs.

2008 was a very successful transition year for us, following our first year in the Super League. We were pipped at the post in the final of the Stewart Cup, and we won the Division III national Championship.

Pre Season Gym Training is currently taking place, for members please view your emails for latest location updates.

Interested in playing for the Wolfhounds this year then shoot an email off to our Recruitment Team (see recruitment page on website).

This year we are again entering in the Ruggerfest Ft Lauderdale tournament where we hope to continue our history of doing well as well as getting away from the current New England Winter.

Wolfhounds at New York Seven's

Congratulations to Greg Bruce who captained the "Hasselhoff's Knights",

the social wing of the Wolfhounds family, to a famous victory in the New York 7's (social bracket).

 The Knights overcame some stiff opposition from the London Magic in the final but in the end

ran away with it, conceding only 3 scores the entire day.

The Knights took a strong squad of 16 to New York. In cold temperatures the Knights looked,

to be honest, like they'd be out late the night before for the first few games before coming together

 nicely in the later rounds.  Bruce put the early form down to "jet lag" (from a 4 hour drive?),

but was very please with the way that they have played in the final couple of games saying

 "we were determined to do David proud".

Stewart Cup

Following a game with more drama than the RWC final NYAC overcame the Wolfhounds by 1 kick.

Scoreline was 6-3 in an unbelievably tight game. NYAC came to Canton full of spirit and some new recruits but soon found they had a hard game on their hands.

In the dying minutes of the game Wolfhounds, from a line out, scored a try from AJ however it was disallowed due to a knock on the ref spotted.

With the ball now back up the field it was an impossible task to push back into the NYAC half. Whistle blew game over NYAC won.

In other news the DI were felled by a strong Worcester and DIII were seriously challenged by Seacoast.

Next week sees an all Wolfhounds competition cumulating in our annual Kangaroo Court.

Fall 07 Season Opener

Wolfhounds opened up the Fall 2007 season with mixed results. The entire club marched this past weekend, with three (3) teams on the road, it was probably too much to expect great results, however, what was achieved does give the club a lot of hope going forward.

Stuart Cup
The Super League 15 went to NYAC RFC in New York and set the record straight about our performance in the Premier League in the Spring. A 25 to 6 win over the Super League giants indicates that the Wolfhounds are able to play with the big boys and gives hope to the next Super League season in 2008.

Div I
Our Div I side which played Div III last season, and who are the reigning DIV III champions, travelled to New Haven in CT. New Haven are one of the few teams to seriously challenge the Wolfhounds in competition over the past few years, the other CT team the CT Yankees, play the Wolfhounds this coming week for what promises to be a very tough game. In any event, the Hounds went to New Haven testing a new Div I team. With many new faces it might have been too much to expect a victory. New Haven are a polished team with new faces also evident. Despite this, the home side showed why they are a potential Div I contender, displaying many polished plays and a high level of fitness also evident. Not withstanding, the Wolfhounds did put up a great fight. Scores by Mike Liberatore and Dave Jones kept the Wolfhounds in contention, however New Haven were the better team on the day. Final score was 12 to 45 in New Havens favor.

Weather on the day was quite hot in the upper 80‘s and high humidity, with a stiff breeze helping and hindering both sides.

The B side game went the opposite direction for New Haven, with the Wolfhounds winning 12 - 0.

Div III

The new Div III side, went to New London CT and were pipped at the post, losing 13 to 10.

The University of Queensland Rugby Academy in association with the
Boston Irish Wolfhounds is conducting an advanced coaching clinic for
Players and Coaches.

24 - 26 August, 2007

The camp is being held at the Needham High School.

One lucky participant at the camp will be awarded a 10 week scholarship
to attend the University of Queensland Rugby Academy High Performance
Player Development Program in Queensland Australia. The scholarship
covers the cost of flights, accommodation and rugby tuition.

Super League Rugby for Fall 2007

Announcing the The Stewart Shield competition.

The competition will consist of the current top four Super League teams in the East. New York Athletic Club, Boston Irish Wolfhounds and the Potomac Athletic Club will all be joining Old Blue in this home/away match series.

"All of the East Coast RSL clubs were invited, but not all were prepared to be included; fortunately those who have been the most successful recently have agreed," said Old Blue head coach Paul Keeler.

"The purpose of Stewart Shield is to try and increase the level of competition that our players experience. Many of the RSL clubs in the East are of the opinion that the current eligibility rules and local area unions, by seeking to limit who can play based on previous RSL selection, restrict competition. This group of friendly matches seeks to provide a much needed increase in competition."

The Stewart Shield is named for former Old Blue Michael Stewart who represented the Old Blue RFC on the pitch from 1981 to 1989. He excelled at flanker, in the best tradition of outstanding Old Blue forwards and their renowned reputation for a relentless style of play. He was twice selected captain of the Old Blue's 1st XV, serving consecutively in the

1983/84 and 1984/85 seasons. An exceptionally gentle and soft-spoken man off the field, Michael displayed extreme fitness to provide Old Blue with great pressure and support from the rear row, and was an unerring tackler. He was exceptional in open play, particularly in the rucking game, and offered constant support in the attack.

Born in turbulent Belfast, Ireland and a graduate of Stirling University in Scotland, where he played for the Scottish Universities, Michael first visited the United States in 1980. He earned an MBA at California's Pepperdine University, and his U.S. citizenship in 1990.

Michael was, at 42 years of age, working as a Vice President of Carr Futures in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11,

2001 when he lost his life, along with thousands of other Americans, in the infamous attack.

The Old Blue RFC are privileged to have to known Michael, and to have been able to count him as one of their most devoted own. He exemplified the best in the Old Blue RFC on the pitch and, foremost, in life as a man.

Wolfhounds take Vermont by storm

Vermont at the Mad River Tournament.

SAN DIEGO Fund Raiser

Attention Wofhounds, current and not so current, and anyone interested in us in general.

In 15 years, we've gone from a rag-tag group of touring players to one of the three largest clubs in the US as we'll be competing this fall in RSL, Division I and Division III; only 2 other clubs in America can say this!

In each of the past 6 years, we have put a team into the National Championship playoffs; 2006 was a history making year in that we accomplished something no other club in the history of US Rugby has done - we brought two teams to the National Championship Finals! We continued our success in 2007 by entering a team into the Rugby Super League and are bringing yet another team to the National Championship Finals in San Diego on June 10th.

For former and current members, we'd like to extend an invitation to support this side as they attempt to bring the club a third National Championship trophy in 5 years! What we propose is that former & current players sponsor their Rugby playing position on the Division 3 championship side. We will have a program produced with each of the Div III squad members and their corresponding sponsors listed. To top it off we will have a send off night in the Briar where all the sponsors can meet our Div III team and wish them the best of luck in San Diego.

Wolfhounds take NERFU Championship

Newport RI.

At the annual NERFU Rugby tournament hosted by Newport RFC at the scenic Fort Adams location the Boston Irish Wolfhounds first team cmae away with honors for the 6^th time in 8 years.

Meeting and beating Boston RFC and Mystic RFC on Saturday, the Hounds ended up playing Connecticut side the Connecticut Yankees in the finals.

It was not a one sided affair however the scoreline favored the Wolfhounds by a long shot 45-5.

The Division III side which is headed to San Diego shortly did not fare very well score unknown, however it was a good run for them prior to the big game on the 10^th of June.

Coast Rugby in winning the Semi-final matchup against Bend 23 - 0.
An as yet unconfirmed report indicates that Mission Rugby will be their
opponents in San Diego again in the final this year.

Jason Lett, former Worcester and now Wolfhounds player will play with the US Falcons in the the second leg of the NA4’s competition.

This is a precursor to the Eagles World Cup selection process and we think Jason is well capable of being a member of the squad.

We have had a former member play with the Eagles, Dave Williams. Hopefully Jason can join him and do us all proud.

Wolfhounds Div III side to USA RUGBY Finals

The Wolfhounds DIV III team are traveling over this weekend to Columbia SC where they will participate in the USA Rugby Qtr Finals (Elite 8) on Saturday and if they win the Semi-final on Sunday.

The squad which has performed well under the direction of Carl Morris and Burke Doherty are fit and strong and looking forward to the challenge which may lead them to a return visit to San Diego CA in a couple of weeks.

11:00am Wolfhounds vs MEDIA RFC from PA in a Division III match up

1:00pm RSL Wolfhounds meet Santa Monica Dolphins from California.

3:00pm NERFU High School vs Young Munster select from Ireland on their Easter Tour

ICC facilities will be open for adult beverages and food at 1:00pm

Free Parking. There may or may not be a small entrance fee of $5 to help cover the cost of holding this event.

Note, this will be the third time the Wolfhounds meet the Dolphins.

We last met them in June of 2004, at the Division 1 championship semi finals, where, in extra time, we managed to overcome very strong opposition, to go on and win the Championship.

Santa Monica went on and won the Division 1 title in 2005 and we had a rematch in San Diego last June at the Division 1 finals.

Unfortunately for the Wolfhounds, they proved to be a much better side on the day and went on to win the 2006 Championship.

In 2007 both teams have moved on to the Super League and by fate we meet again.

Who will win this third game, now there is a question. Santa Monica have much more game time than us but we have a fresher squad and coming off a tough defeat last weekend we are eager to show the Rugby world we can play with the big boys.

It all makes for a great days Rugby on Sunday.
